The strap of a Swatch watch is not held by traditional spring bars like most wristwatches: it is retained by a solid through-pin (sometimes called a Swatch pin) that is driven out with a pin punch. This workshop guide details the complete method, the tools, the diameters, the models concerned and the pitfalls to avoid.

Essential tools
To work on a Swatch strap without damaging the plastic case or the PVD finish, you need a well-guided 0.80 mm pin punch (Bergeon 7260 or equivalent), a Plexiglas case holder and a light watchmaker's mallet (30 g brass). Avoid awls that are too fine (Ø0,6) which bend on the first blow, and Ø1,0 ones that will not fit into the bore of the pin.
Diameters and lug widths by Swatch range
| Range | Ø pin | Lug width | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gent (original) | 1,30 mm | 16 mm | 17,3 mm |
| Irony Medium | 1,30 mm | 17 mm | 18,3 mm |
| Irony Big / Big Bold | 1,50 mm | 19 mm | 20,4 mm |
| Skin Classic | 1,20 mm | 16 mm | 17,2 mm |
| Flik Flak (children) | 1,10 mm | 14 mm | 15,2 mm |
| Pop (2018+) | 1,30 mm | 20 mm | 21,3 mm |
These values are measured with a 0.01 mm calliper on original SMH bars; a deviation of ±0.02 mm remains compatible with the lug seat.
Step-by-step removal with the pin punch
- Identify the direction: Turn the watch over and locate the arrow engraved on the inner lug. The pin is driven out in the direction of the arrow, never against it.
- Brace the watch on a case holder, with the opening facing you so that the pin comes out downwards.
- Position the pin punch Ø0,80 mm perpendicular to the pin, slightly inserted into the bore.
- First blow sharp tap with the mallet: 2 to 3 firm strikes are enough to free the pin.
- Continue until the tip protrudes 3 to 4 mm on the other side; then grip the pin with brass tweezers.
- Release the strap by pulling the pin along its axis; never force it by twisting.
Refitting and check
Refitting follows the reverse path: present the pin on the arrow side, push by hand until it stops then finish with the pin punch while aligning the two lug holes. Check that the strap pivots freely with axial play of less than 0.1 mm.
A Swatch pin is machined from 304 stainless steel hardened to 580 HV; it can be reused 4 to 5 times before the locking flats begin to deform.

Common mistakes
- Driving against the arrow: the pin has a notched side that locks into the lug. Forcing it the wrong way splits the plastic.
- Using a drill bit: the flutes grip the pin and deform the lug hole.
- A mallet that is too heavy: a 100 g hammer cracks polycarbonate Gent cases.
- Refitting a bent pin: a glance with a 10× loupe lets you scrap it before refitting.
FAQ
Can a Swatch pin be replaced with a standard spring bar?
No, Swatch lugs do not have the internal boss needed to retain the shoulders of a classic spring bar: the bar would fall out at the first knock.
What is the service life of a Ø0,80 mm pin punch?
About 80 to 120 extractions before the tip rounds off; it is then re-sharpened on a 600-grit diamond wheel.
Is there a Swatch-specific tool?
Yes, the SMH B0021 Swatch tool combines a captive pin punch and a case holder: practical but limited to the Gent. A generic 5-tip kit covers the whole range.
Are straps interchangeable between ranges?
Only at identical lug width: a Gent strap (16 mm) cannot be fitted to an Irony Big (19 mm) without a shim.
